Nail Salons Face Growing Pressure for Clearer Pricing
Consumer complaints about unclear add-on charges are prompting some Oregon nail salons to rework how they present pricing.
Pricing complaints remain one of the most common consumer concerns raised about nail salons across Oregon, according to interviews with local consumer advocacy groups and salon owners themselves. The core issue, in most cases, isn't the base price of a manicure or pedicure, but confusion over add-on charges applied during the appointment.
"Clients feel blindsided when the price at checkout doesn't match what they expected walking in," said one consumer advocate who has fielded complaints on the issue. "It doesn't have to be dishonest to feel unfair if it's not communicated clearly upfront."
Salons Responding With Clearer Menus
A number of Oregon salon owners say they've responded by redesigning printed and posted service menus to clearly separate base services from common add-ons, with prices listed for each individually rather than bundled into a single quoted range.
"We put every add-on price directly on the board now," said one Eugene salon owner. "It slows down the initial conversation a little, but it eliminates almost all the pricing disputes we used to have."
A Broader Industry Conversation
Local cosmetology associations say they're increasingly incorporating pricing transparency guidance into training materials for salon owners, framing it as both a consumer protection issue and a practical business strategy for building repeat clientele.
While pricing practices still vary significantly salon to salon, the trend among Oregon businesses interviewed points toward clearer upfront communication becoming an increasingly common industry standard, driven as much by customer expectation as by any formal regulation.
