Public Access Expands Along a Regional Trail in Eastern Oregon
A new broadband build-out and expanded trail access are changing daily life for several small communities in Eastern Oregon.
Several small communities in Eastern Oregon are seeing tangible change this summer as a long-planned broadband expansion project reaches its final phase, alongside a separate effort to extend public access along a regional multi-use trail.
For towns that have spent years near the bottom of statewide connectivity rankings, the broadband work in particular represents a shift with implications well beyond convenience. Local officials point to remote work opportunities, telehealth access, and small business operations as areas expected to benefit most directly.
Closing a Longstanding Gap
"There are households here that have been waiting a decade for reliable internet," said one county economic development coordinator. "This isn't a luxury upgrade. It changes what's possible for people who want to stay in these communities and still participate in the broader economy."
The trail expansion, funded separately through a mix of state and county resources, adds several new access points connecting smaller towns to a longer regional route popular with cyclists and hikers. Local business owners along the corridor say they're hopeful the additional access will translate into modest but meaningful increases in visitor traffic.
Balancing Growth With Rural Character
Community leaders are quick to note that neither project is about turning small Eastern Oregon towns into something they're not. The goal, several said, is closing practical gaps — connectivity, access, basic infrastructure — without disrupting the pace and character that residents value.
Construction on both projects is expected to wrap by early next year, with local officials planning community events to mark the completion of each phase.
