Willamette Valley Growers See Steady Gains in Export Markets

Specialty crop growers in the Willamette Valley are reporting steady gains in export markets this year, a bright spot for a sector that has faced volatile domestic pricing in recent seasons.

Hazelnuts, wine grapes, and nursery stock remain the region's strongest export categories, with growers citing consistent demand from established international buyers even as broader trade conditions remain uncertain.

Diversification as a Strategy

Several growers say diversifying buyer relationships has become a deliberate strategy in recent years, reducing reliance on any single market. That approach appears to be paying off, with export volumes holding relatively steady even during periods of softer domestic pricing.

"We learned not to put all our weight on one relationship," said one hazelnut grower in the mid-valley. "Having multiple markets gives us room to absorb a bad year in any one of them."

Labor and Logistics Remain Challenges

Despite the positive export trends, growers continue to cite labor availability and transportation logistics as ongoing operational challenges. Rising shipping costs in particular have narrowed margins even as sales volumes have grown.

Agricultural extension offices across the valley say they're fielding increased interest from growers exploring new specialty crops as a way to further diversify, a trend they expect to continue if current export demand holds through the coming year.
